"Are you done setting up?"

It was his turn to be engrossed with the equipment and the frame tonight. She'd been recording videos all afternoon but now she felt like resting, letting go, and leaving her secrets with the night.

"Hm. Almost."

They didn't do much today, but she was a little tired. There was a clump of giant rocks on the sea so shallow that they just waded to get there. She kept her camera on him, recording this boy playing pretend in the middle of almost-nowhere.

Rocks piled together, tall above the glistening water that surrounded it and a boy's shadow conquering a make-believe mountain. She wasn't sure it was wise to use him as stock footage, but it felt like a waste if she didn't record anything.

Burnt from the sun, they'd winded down early for the evening. She laid out the blanket on the veranda of the cabin. The resort wasn't illuminated by lamp posts. Here they could laugh or cry, kiss or fight, and no one would bear witness. It was the perfect place to capture starlight.

"Alright, I'm good. You can turn off the light now!"

It was her signal to turn off the switch.

She joined him on the ground. He didn't say anything when she pulled his arm out and laid on it, a habit to break soon.

"Do you think we'll see falling stars?" he asked.

They were both looking up the sky.

"I'll make a wish, if we did. In one universe, there's a version of us who got together for real. I'd wish them a happy ever after."

"I didn't peg you as a romantic."

"I'm not," she denied as he draped an arm around her stomach. She breathed in deeply. His hair smelled like coconuts, just like hers.

That's a lovely little scene, with a hint of a larger story we don't get to hear. Nice, complete on its own, I think, because it does open up your imagination for the larger story.
